Recycling Fees and Producer Responsibility
Dear Customer,
We would like to inform you about important changes regarding recycling fees and producer responsibility.
Producer Responsibility
Producer responsibility is a statutory obligation for companies that place packaging on the market. Its aim is to ensure that packaging waste is collected, recycled, and processed in an environmentally friendly manner. This promotes a circular economy and reduces environmental impact.
In practice, producer responsibility means that companies bear the costs associated with recycling the packaging they introduce to the market. Fees are determined based on the material and weight of the packaging.
Selection of Producer Organization in 2025
Starting January 1, 2025, companies can have an agreement with only one producer organization, such as Sumi Oy or Suomen Pakkaustuottajat Oy. Previously established hybrid agreements will end on December 31, 2024.
Ki-Sal Oy has chosen Sumi Oy as its producer organization, and all recycling fees will be determined according to Sumi Oy’s 2025 price list. The price list is available at: https://www.sumi.fi/tuottajavastuu/kierratysmaksut
Recycling Fees and Reporting
As of January 1, 2024, producer responsibility applies to all companies that place packaging on the market, regardless of their turnover. This means that every company must manage the reporting and recycling fees for the packaging they introduce to the market.
Ki-Sal Oy will handle the recycling fees for service packaging on your behalf. This includes both RINKI and SUP fees:
- Service Packaging: Packaging that you order from us, fill, and sell directly to consumers (e.g., take-away containers, filled sandwiches). For these, Ki-Sal is responsible for both reporting and paying the fees.
- Non-Service Packaging: Packaging that is filled and then delivered to, for example, a store or café for sale. In these cases, you are responsible for reporting and recycling fees.
We can provide you with information on all packaging—including non-service packaging—to support your reporting.
How Does This Affect You?
- Service Packaging: Recycling fees (RINKI and SUP) are included in our prices, and you do not need to handle reporting. Invoices will show RINKI and SUP fees as separate line items.
- Non-Service Packaging: You are responsible for reporting and recycling fees. We offer information to support your reporting.
- Reporting: Packaging data for 2024 must be reported by January 31, 2025. In the future, packaging data will be reported annually, but companies have the option to agree on more frequent reporting if needed.
If you have any questions about producer responsibility or reporting for your products, we are happy to assist you.
